Switching from another registered agent service

Moving to Mainstay Filing costs $149 a year plus your state’s change fee, between $149 and $249 in the first year. It renews at $149.

Time it to the renewal

File the change so it is accepted shortly before the old service renews, and tell the old provider not to renew. Cancellation wording differs by provider, so read yours first. At Mainstay Filing the rule is simple: Tell Mainstay Filing before renewal and it will not renew. A filing already submitted that year cannot be refunded.

What stays the same

Your LLC, its filings and its EIN do not change when the agent does; only the name and address on the state’s record. If you formed through a package that included the annual report, ask whether a new agent-only plan affects it: A registered agent alone, for a company that is already formed, is $149 a year. That plan does not include the annual report.

What to compare

• The renewal price, not the first-year price.
• How fast papers are forwarded. Service of process is scanned and uploaded the same business day at no fee.
• What counts as free mail. The first three government mailings a year are scanned free; after that a per-piece fee applies.
